My version of the circle of life

18 March 2006

My Cousin: I'm so excited to be visiting Minneapolis this weekend! Do you want to get together after your hair cut on Saturday?

Me: Um, wait a second.

My Cousin: What?

Me: I'm not getting my hair 'cut', I'm getting my hair 'done' and there's a huge difference.

My Cousin: ... Huh?

Me: *rolling my eyes* The difference is about $200 dollars and 3 hours.

My Cousin: Oh. I think I now understand.

He's never been a single, 28 year old female with hair down to the middle of her back before, clearly.

Um... I still don't see the diference. My wife tries to explain, but all I hear is "blah blah blah Color blah blah blah $200." After the stylist is "done," it still isn't "done" to here standard. What's the point? Just wear a hat.

I'll weigh in on the other side of the fence. Good hair is one of the first things I notice on a woman and yours is fabulous. Worth those benjamins - but that's just one man's opinion...

Huge waste of money. Just shave your head.

I often wish the Wife would cut hers down - not just get it 'relaxed' and styled. Relaxed? What the fuck? Was it stressed? And why does it take forever to relax? And then we have to put some greasy goo into it that magically dries and keeps your hair 'smooth'?

Besides - she's like a dryer sheet when we're sleeping. Static cling. And that massive head of hair always seems to choke me in the night.

I never said her hair looked bad or I didn't notice. It may be worth every penny, but I can't get over how much effort it takes to have hair and be a woman. Come on, there has got to be a simpler way. I think this is why wigs are coming back. Just look at how many fake hair stores and stands you see in the malls.

Josh is right... Bald or shaved head is the way to go. It didn't look bad on Natalie Portman, Sinead O'Connor, Demi Moore, or Persis Khambatta.

Hmmm. It seems hair is a touchy subject. For what it's worth I get my haircut at a barber (a place called Al's Barber off of Johnson where I pay $20 including tip). I like my haircuts, my girlfriend likes my haircuts. I guess guys are just lucky like that...

That settles it. I'm just gonna have to take some more self-portraits to bring some resolution to this conversation ;).
