This post is affectionately dedicated to my brother Chris

23 August 2005

I can't believe I used the word costed today. Yes I really, really did that, but in my own defense I was extremely tired at the time and at least my name doesn't end in "Spears" or "Beckham".

I might be from Wisconsin but at least I didn't say:

  • nucular
  • supposably
  • borrow-me
  • irregardless
  • orientate
  • boughten
  • or the word seen as in "I seen it"

Aren't we missing the bigger picture here? I was able to correctly identify a backhoe *AND* use the word in a sentence! Come on!! How many women British people knew that was a backhoe? That has to count for something, right?

Comments

Oh lord. There is nothing in this world that makes me want to jam a pen in someone's eye more than "irregardless."

Except maybe for people who say, "Ping me after the meeting" or "Let's take this conversation offline".

Or how about people who refer to marketing materials as "post tense"? How does that work for ya Steve?

Man! I totally thought you said "costed" on purpose!!?! How about the word "conversate?" I DESPISE that one }:(

"post tense" doesn't bother me nearly as much as "irregardless" simply because it was only one stupid marketing wonk instead half the freaking people I work with.

Le Serial Cynica LIVES! Hallelujah!!!!

Sadly, I did not use the word 'costed' on purpose. It just slipped out before I had the chance to go home and catch up on my sleep. Rest assured it won't happen again, irregardless of what other people might think...

I love the word irreguardless....

*looks around for Steve's pen...*

OK...

I meant ---> irregardless

Other local favourites are, "Expecially" (why so many pronounce an unnecessary 'x', I don't know), "All's" (as in, "All's you gotta do..."), and "Mandatory requirement" (note the redundance). "Irregardless" takes the cake, and is used far more in Minnesota than anywhere else. Stopped taking note on these after downing too many pints. Then, I only correct Margaret - the rest is mere observation. Whah ha! Cinzano! Err, Cheers!

Did I ever mention how absolutely adorable your new little comments box is?

SO cute!

What I don't get is the propensity of people in, at least as far as I can tell, central Indiana to say something like "My car needs fixed" instead of "My car needs to be fixed". The "to be" is totally dropped from the sentence. I don't understand where that comes from at all. That's a new one for this import.
