My friend got robbed today. Her house is completely destroyed, she has no money, and nowhere to go.
Think the office will let me off for a week to go fetch her?

I think you should go fetch her, yes.
Not sure whether you should try explaining the situation to the office or just pull a sickie - it ultimately depends on what your boss is like. I would have thought a few days off to take care of a very frightened friend would be fine by most employers - you could always offer to take some work with you on the road, and be contactable by mobile...
